HISTORY

Curwood's is steeped in Jersey's history. It was established in 1892 by Henry William Curwood. Following his death his four sons and four daughters ran the business until the First World War when the men left to serve their country.

In 1929 Curwood's provided the hearse and carriages at Lily Langtry's funeral.

During the Second World War some of Curwood's vehicles were requisitioned for use by the occupying Germans troops. However with foresight a number of cars were dismantled and hidden around the stables under straw in the Garage

At that time a great deal of Curwood's business involved ‘Empire work'. Many people who returned from the Empire were accustomed to being chauffeured. Wealthy people had their own chauffeurs but when they passed away many chauffeurs were employed by Curwood's.

The current fleet of fourteen limousines has not only provided transport for many Island Dignitaries but also those visiting from all over the world.

One of the most memorable events in Curwood's history was in 1989 on a splendid sunny day when John and his late brother Peter Curwood carried Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness Prince Philip. The Curwood's two chestnut horses pulled the open landau to the opening of the Library.

Curwood's has been privileged to have been of service to many members of the Royal Family over the years and has a close association with Government House. For as long as anyone can remember, Curwood's have also been the exclusive provider of limousines for the Visite Royale and this is the 34th year Jonathan Curwood has driven for the Visite. In January 2007 John Curwood retired and sold the business to Maillard's. Over many years a strong and dedicated relationship had been built up between the two. Maillard's also a family run business have served Jersey people for in excess of 80 years. Maillard's is also an Estate Agency specialising in country and equestrian properties as well as having a wealth of experience in valuing land. Maillard's also incorporate a Funeral Directors whose compassionate staff have many years experience offering a 24 hour service to bereaved families.
